Happy New Year!

Report Date: January 1, 2016

The month of December has been as busy as ever for me this year. It has also been a little bit challenging do to the strong south east winds we have been receiving the past few weeks. It is very abnormal to see such a south east breeze this time of year. Normally the wind comes from the north but there haven’t been any cold fronts lately to trigger this wind. To me it looks like we are going to have a very late winter this year. This might lead us into an epic spring for fishing South Florida.

I started the month out doing a wahoo trip in the Bahamas on a friend of mines boat. The weather was absolutely miserable. It took us ten hours to cross when normally it should’ve taken 5. The only good thing about the weather was that we didn’t see another boat in site for three days.
After we refueled and got settled in the night it was off to fishing very early the next morning. We woke up before the sun came up and started fishing shortly after. To our luck within the first two hours we had 8 nice wahoos in the boat.

After the bite slowed down we decided to do some deep dropping. The queens were biting like mad dogs and we landed 20 big queens up to ten pounds in about an hours time.

The following day we worked our way back home. The fishing wasn’t as good as the day prior but we still landed two big kingfish, two wahoos, and a bunch of yellow eye snappers. Plenty of table fare for the crew and owners. It was a long rough trip but thankfully the fishing produced.

When I arrived back to the states I began fishing locally in Miami. I have been catching or seeing sailfish every trip with the poorest conditions imaginable. If the conditions and the wind change direction the sailfishing will be on fire. There are plenty of them here already and when the time is right these fish will group up and begin there treck southward. This is when you will see double digit days if you are lucky enough to be out there when they are pouring through.

Aside from the sailfishing we have been catching lots of quality amber and almaco jacks on the wrecks, with plenty of big sharks, barracudas, bonitas, and kingfish to boot.

The winds are supposed to calm down this weekend which will give us a chance to run offshore and target some different species. I still have availabilities in January so if you would like to go, please send me an email or give me a call.

I Hope every one has a safe and Happy New Year.

Sincerely,

Capt. Fred David
